Rodeo SA

What I should have been doing all morning was catching up on blog posts.  I've been a bit neglectful lately as I'm sure you've noticed.  What I actually did all morning was update my Dad's website and research my potential move away from the Blogger platform.  I did however, manage to get one post written...

February is rodeo season in San Antonio.  For two weeks, cowboys and country singers dominate the city's entertainment landscape.  If you're looking for a good way to experience "Texan" culture, this is it!  A group of us non-native-Texans decided to go check out what all the hype was about.  Chris and I have been to rodeos and county fairs before, so we weren't too surprised by what we saw.  Some of the other members of our group, however, were treated to quite the education!

We started our adventure with a walk around the fair grounds.  We took in the 4-H pig show and stopped for lots of pictures with farm implements

and assorted livestock.

At dinner time, we enjoyed a buffet of fried delights including corn dogs, onion rings, 

and of course funnel cakes!

Then, we headed inside for the main event: the rodeo!!

We watched kids ride sheep in mutton busting,

cowboys rope and wrestle calves (serious skills there!),

and still more cowboys hang on to, or get bucked off of, large bulls and horses.

 

We opted not to stay for the concert following the rodeo.  Something about the Mexican version of Lawrence Welk (complete with blue leisure suit) just didn't seem that appealing.  Maybe we'll be able to pick a better night for the concert next year... when we actually buy our tickets more than 4 hours in advance!
